该习语为英式英语。出自刘易斯·卡洛尔所写的《爱丽丝魔镜之旅》(Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There)-《爱丽丝漫游奇境记》的续集：爱丽丝到White Queen那里打工，工资是1天两便士，还有一份jam， 属于奖金。这果酱的给法是Jam tomorrow and jam yesterday， but never jam today （昨天明天都有，只有今天没有，也就等于永远没有）。现在，人们常用其比喻“许诺但不兑现的东西” 。有时候欧美工人要求老板兑现承诺时，有时会打着“WHERE IS THE JAM”的标语。

常见于美式英语。很多时候，为庆祝节日或举行胜点，会举办游行活动，但在这种高兴的时候突然下雨，是让人非常扫兴的事情。所以用这个习语来表示“扫兴，泼冷水”。

源自17世纪法国著名的寓言作家拉·封丹(Jean de La Fontaine) 的《猴子与猫》(The Monkey and the Cat)：一只狡猾聪明的猴子想吃火里的栗子，却又怕烫伤自己，就哄骗单纯的猫从火中取出烤熟的栗子。结果猫把栗子取出来，猫爪子也被烫伤了，而栗子却被猴子吃了个精光。
